Happy July everyone!! We have our two winners for our July reads!

We will be doing a Hunger Games reread for the “fantasy/dystopian” category!! You’re also welcome to join if it’s your first time reading the series. It will be so fun to watch everyone read it for the first time too. It’s been around 15 years since I read these books so I am so excited to dive back in and then hopefully read the prequels for the first time afterwards!

Let’s talk about the books we all read in May!

Our fantasy pick was The Bone Ships by RJ Barker. I just finished this a couple of days ago and I unfortunately gave this one 2⭐️. I had a really hard time getting through this book. The beginning was extremely slow and it didn’t have a clear direction and story line until like 150pages into the book. The rest of the book was very slow moving until the very last like 10%. I can see the potential in this series and can understand why a lot of people love it, but personally the writing style and the pacing is not working for me so I will be DNFing the series ☹️

And speaking of DNFing… I did have to DNF our thriller pick, The Maidens by Alex Michaelides. I listened to this on audio and for the first two hours I was so extremely bored and kept zoning out so I decided to start over and try again. I then listened all the way to 80% and just couldn’t do it anymore. I was so extremely bored it felt like a waste of time by that point. I was very disappointed because the silent patient by this author is one of my favorite thrillers of all time. So I am so sorry to those of you who read this for Mays bookclub!

Unfortunately April was a big bust for me. I DNFd our fantasy pick and didn’t love our thriller pick so let’s discuss…

Fantasy: The Book of Fallen Leaves

This was one of my most highly anticipated new releases for 2026. This was pitched as Game of Thrones meets Shogun which are two of some of my favorite shows of all time (I haven’t read the books). I honestly went in pretty blind other than knowing that pitch. I don’t DNF books this early on EVER but I only got 50pages in and knew this book wasn’t going to be for me. I have since seen very many mixed reviews. The book is very slow and dense and within those 50 pages, I had no idea what was happening and where the story was going. If anyone has finished this book please let me know if you enjoyed it and if it’s worth revisiting!

Thriller: If You Lie

I listened to this book on audio and there wasn’t anything necessarily wrong or bad about this book. I think I went in with too high of expectations first of all because I loved You’ll Never Know by the same author. That book was so fast paced from beginning to end I literally could not put it down! But I found If You Lie to be very slow. It’s not a bad book by any means, however, I haven’t thought about it at all since we finished it and there wasn’t much for me to actually discuss with this one.
